18” x 24” | Oil on Canvas

2021

This piece was started near the beginning of the pandemic, and I often connect it to the experience of coronavirus, because this flower species is actually called an Anemone Coronaria.

Greek myth gives the anemone two meanings, the arrival of spring breezes(they are often called windflowers) and the loss of a loved one. Chinese and Egyptian cultures considered it a symbol of illness because of the coloring, while European peasants carried them to ward off disease. White Anemones have many meanings in flower symbolism, with different ones in eastern vs western cultures, but they are often said to represent sincerity, and the flower’s natural reaction of closing up at night and opening for the morning often symbolizes anticipation for something soon to arrive.
